Taipei: A Thriving City of Innovation and Tradition
Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, is a dynamic metropolis that beautifully merges modernity with tradition. The city’s skyline is dominated by the iconic Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world, offering panoramic views of the bustling city below. At one stage Taipei 101 had the fastest lifts of any building in the world, and riding these up to the observation levels is still quite an experience. Beyond its impressive skyscrapers however, Taipei is a city of culture, history, and innovation.
I was fortunate to visit the National Palace Museum, home to one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts (including the famous Jadeite Cabbage). The museum is a fascinating dive into both China and Taiwan’s rich cultural history, showcasing thousands of years of Chinese civilization. Viewing some of the remarkably intricate drawings on display there, which were also very large in length and width, was an unexpected surprise. The various displays of historic ceramic items was fascinating to see and learn about, especially given the close relevance to significant historical periods.
Intricately carved, modern-day Jade items are still highly sought-after, and valuable. A large amount of them were on display (and sale) in the observation levels of Taipei 101 when I was there. These are acquired by locals and foreigners alike both for their artistic beauty, and in for potential appreciation in value as investment items.
Taiwan hosts Computex Taipei annually, also known as Taipei International Information Technology Show. This is one of the largest technology trade shows internationally – rivalling Mobile World Congress and CES. This extravaganza is spread across a handful of major convention centres, and also envelops Taipei 101 & all surrounding hotel complexes. Attending this event is recommended for anyone with a keen interest in information technology infrastructure. I’ve discovered that it is an eye-opening introduction into the impressive array of equipment manufacturers who support the majority of the world’s computing needs (this is a subject in itself, for a future article).

Taipei Food
Taipei is also a paradise for food lovers. The city’s night markets, such as Shilin Night Market and Raohe Street Night Market, are bustling hubs of activity, where you can sample Taiwan’s iconic street food. Try Xiao long bao (soup dumplings), stinky tofu, and the ever-popular bubble tea—a sweet, chewy drink that originated in Taiwan and is now enjoyed worldwide.
The city is also known for its green spaces, such as Yangmingshan National Park, which is just a short ride from the city center. If you’re a nature lover, the park offers hot springs, hiking trails, and scenic views that provide a refreshing break from the urban hustle.

Nature at Its Best: Taiwan's Incredible Landscapes
Beyond the cities, Taiwan is a nature lover’s dream. The island is blessed with breathtaking landscapes, from misty mountains and lush forests to stunning coastlines and crystal-clear lakes. One of the highlights is Taroko Gorge, a marble-walled canyon located in Taroko National Park. Whether you’re hiking along the Shakadang Trail or visiting the iconic Eternal Spring Shrine, Taroko Gorge is a place of awe-inspiring beauty that showcases Taiwan’s natural splendor.
For those seeking a more tranquil escape, head to Sun Moon Lake, the largest body of freshwater in Taiwan. Surrounded by lush mountains, the lake is perfect for boat tours, cycling, and hiking. The serene atmosphere, combined with picturesque views, makes it a must-visit destination for those looking to relax and reconnect with nature.
If you’re interested in Taiwan’s stunning coastline, don’t miss the East Coast National Scenic Area. Known for its dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, the area is a haven for outdoor activities like surfing, diving, and snorkeling. And for a truly unique experience, the Kenting National Park at the southern tip of the island offers beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and a vibrant tropical atmosphere.

Cultural and Spiritual Delights
Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage is evident throughout the island, with its fusion of traditional Chinese, indigenous, and Japanese influences. Lukang, one of Taiwan’s oldest towns, is a great place to explore traditional temples, historic architecture, and local handicrafts. The Lungshan Temple in Taipei is another must-visit, where you can experience the island’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions while admiring the intricate architecture.
Taiwan is also home to vibrant festivals that celebrate its cultural diversity. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the Lantern Festival, the skies light up with thousands of colorful lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. Or time your visit to coincide with Chinese New Year celebrations, when the streets are filled with dragon dances, fireworks, and family gatherings.

A Culinary Journey Like No Other
Taiwan is renowned for its food, and a visit to the island wouldn’t be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Street food is at the heart of Taiwanese cuisine, and the night markets are the perfect place to sample a variety of local treats. Beyond bubble tea, Taiwan’s food scene is packed with flavors and textures to explore.
One of the most famous dishes is Beef Noodle Soup, a hearty and comforting meal that comes in many variations across the island. For something more adventurous, try Lu Rou Fan, a savory braised pork rice dish that’s a staple in Taiwanese households. You’ll also find an endless array of dumplings, spring rolls, and skewered meats, each more delicious than the last.
Taiwan is also known for its diverse range of teas, and a visit to a traditional tea house is a must for tea connoisseurs. Try Oolong tea, which is grown locally in the mountainous regions, or sample the famous Taiwanese bubble tea, which has gained international fame for its chewy tapioca pearls and refreshing flavors.
