Monorail systems have long been a fascination of mine, although I have only ever ridden on two (perhaps a subject for another article). The feeling of riding above city streets in a monorail is almost like experiencing a Disney ride, but as an adult – and not within Disneyland! Suspended railways such as the Schwebebahn are perhaps the ultimate expression of the monorail concept. In numerous cities globally, conventional monorail systems have not stood the test of time and have been decommissioned. It’s wonderful to see the Schwebebahn being maintained, used and appreciated in the way that it is (it carries approximately 80,000 passengers per week day).
